News

To round off the year, it's the competition, studio / portrait group, and social season at KCC. An interesting mix of events to see us through to the end of December, before the start of the next fantastic year at the club that's really making the news. Please note that one of the two Nov 19th competitions for portraits (for pics taken at the Club's own studio group) has had to be moved. Keep an eye on the website to see when it will take place, but expect it to be in December. The other portrait competition of Nov 19th (portraits taken anywhere) is not affected, and WILL be on that night. Also, take a look at the provisional list of visitors for the early part of 2009: a great selection of interesting and stimulating nights are on the cards!

Great news about one of our regular visitors and hopefully soon-to-be members, Nic Baxter. Nic recently won a highly commended place in SightSavers competition against 600 other entries. Nic recieved his award at the Thames Southbank Gallery in London. Well done Nic, & keep up the good work! Follow the link to see Nic’s winner.

Derry Brabbs is coming to KCC in March 2009! The famous photographer and rambler is best known for his contributions to the TV programmes and books about Alfred Wainwright’s Lake District and James Herriot’s Yorkshire. Keep an eye on this website for more details of his visit as they become available.!

Ben Osborne FRPS is the Overall Winner of the 2007 Shell 'Wildlife Photographer of the Year' award. This is the most prestigious, coveted and strongly-fought competition of its kind in the world (32000 entries from around the globe). He is therefore a master of wildlife & landscape photography, and he visited us on the 15th of October with a presentation on those two popular subjects. The importance of this specific event was recognised by Amateur Photographer magazine, which promoted it in its edition of 4th October. In addition to winning such a famous competition, Ben has contributed to BBC TV programmes and books 'Life in the Freezer', 'Blue Planet', and 'Planet Earth', and he regularly leads 'Light & Land' tours to exotic locations around the world. Recently, his amazing contribution to the world photographic scene has been recognised by the RPS, awarding him an honorary fellowship. Yes, in addition to Mike Maloney & Will Cheung, Ben Osborne is yet another fantastic big name to have visited Kempston Camera Club!

Rails at Dent by Mike Fuller

1st October brought along Mike Fuller, with a Photoshop B&W masterclass. This was a top-notch presentation, intentionally geared to a specific topic. Not just any topic though, but to the rapidly-growing area of producing superb, fine-art quality B&W images. There has been a massive resurgence of interest in B&W, and Mike's presentation gave us what we needed to match the best in the business. This really was a special amd well-received event, with an expert practitioner and lecturer at the helm.

Good news for some of the KCC members as they became official accredited photographers at the recent Bedford International Games. A great benefit of being a member of KCC!

Gifted photographer and influential journalist Will Cheung was with us on 28th May, to present an inspiring set of images, many in stunning black & white. Ranging from portraits to landscape, wildlife and travel, it was a superb show that left us in awe of Will's image-making talent. Not only can Will take pictures, but he has the knack of being able to make pictures: he can see how / where a picture can be made from what most of us would ignore or pass by. It was truly an uplifting and memorable evening.

Looking above at the things going on at Kempston Camera Club, we hope you'll agree that we're the rising star of photographic clubs and societies in Bedfordshire. Our appeal is much wider however, with members and visitors from Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, and even Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. Please come along yourself and find out why!
